Explore · card treatment
One card holds the project back and hands you its colour when you point at it. The other shows you nothing: a rectangle of white stock on charcoal, with a step punched out of one corner and the title set low. Every card is cut differently, so the row reads as a set of shapes before it reads as a list of projects.
Candidate
A rounded rectangle whose edge runs level, falls away on a shallow diagonal, then carries on level at the lower height. Every turn on that path is radiused, including the concave one at the foot of the fall, which is why the step is drawn rather than clipped. The cut is a constant size in pixels, not a proportion, so a narrow card and a wide one look punched by the same die. Depth, angle and position vary card to card from a fixed table, and one card in the set is left plain so the variations read as variations. The small disc left in each cut is what tells you the gap was removed rather than missing.

I kept rebuilding the same AI chat screens for every client, so I built them once: a set of ready made, animated chat components that a designer can brand in minutes and put together just by prompting any AI tool, like Claude Design.

The reference treatment applied straight: cream windows with one heavy charcoal outline on every drawn edge, lying on a single pastel wallpaper that runs behind the whole row rather than repeating inside each card. There is no gradient and no shadow, because the reference has neither. The card holds three things — the mark, the name, the sector — and the mark is the card's picture rather than a bullet beside the title, which is only affordable because the tagline, the outcome and the foot were cut. The hover is the operating system's own: at rest every window is inactive, and pointing at one floods its title bar with that client's colour. Writing has no client, so it floods charcoal and reverses its label instead.

The same windows on the world's own sheet instead of a wallpaper. The legs are pen line and watercolour wash on cream paper, so the ground here is that paper continued — a shader tuned to the tone sampled from the corner of the final frame, with fibre and tooth but no crumples, folds or staining, because the plates were re-generated to remove exactly those. The garden's green appears once, at the size it has in the film: a small lit screen behind the heading, so the section title is what the machine is displaying and the grid is what is open on it.

Engineering paper, from the spec-sheet reference rather than the retro-OS ones: a plain 20px rule at the same near-invisible contrast that reference uses, warmed to the site's cream so it does not put a cold grey plane under a hand-drawn garden. The ground is the only thing this candidate changes — the cards are identical to the two rows above, so the comparison is between sheets and nothing else. Two repeating gradients, no shader and no image, which matters for the one ground that would sit directly under the world's own canvas renderer.

The grid's card as it stands, unchanged. Greyscale line work at rest, with the halftone forming in the project's colour on hover, scattering, and clearing to a plate the client signs. Colour is the reward here rather than the resting state.
